Course Description:

Computer networks and communications are fundamental aspects of modern computing. This course covers the basic concepts and techniques on data communications, computer networks and communications. The seven-layered ISO OSI Reference Model and the protocols involved in each layer will be studied.

A course on operating systems (CS312 or equivalent) is required.

Evaluation:

• Evaluation on each student will be done based on the following:
  1. Assignments - 40%
  2. Quiz - 5% (Solution)
  3. Midterm Exam - 20% (Solution)
  4. Final Exam - 30% (Solution)
  5. Class Participation - 5%
  6. Final Marks
• Note: the above evaluation scheme may change slightly during the course.

There will be about a half dozen assignments (worth 40% of the final mark).

Late assignments may be handed in, but there will be a penalty of 20% of the mark for assignments turned in less than one day late, and an additional penalty of 10% for each day thereafter.

Cheating Policy -- Cheating will not be tolerated in this course. Students are encouraged discuss things related to courses and assignments but the materials handed in must be his/her own. The maximum penalty for the first offense is for the assignment in question. For subsequent offenses may result in an automatic failure of the course and possibly other academic punishments.

Class Participation:

Students are strongly encouraged to attend all lectures and to participate in discussions during lectures. 5% of the final mark is assigned for good class participation.
